The Birmingham born star has previously spoken about being a victim of domestic violence, but recently she opened up about the severity of her abuse and explained that she would often go to work with bruises and cuts, which would be concealed with make-up.
Speaking to the Mirror about her previous partner - who she began dating at 18 years of age - Jamelia said: "I think he was stupid and cowardly for making me suffer... He could've killed me, of course. The scariest thing was leaving. The psychological fear is much worse than being hit."
The former couple share a 12-year-old daughter, Teja, who gave Jamelia the strength and courage to eventually walk away from the relationship.
And now the songstress has said that she and her ex are on good terms again, after she forgave him.
However, she has told her daughter Teja about the abuse to ensure that she doesn't fall victim to the same situation.
Jamelia added: "It's important that she is aware that it's not normal and not right."
In 2004 - following the birth of Teja in 2001 - Jamelia released her highest charting UK track to date, 'Thank You', which is known to be about her former flame and the pain she suffered during that time of her life.
She described the process of writing the single as "therapeutic".
Jamelia went on to marry footballer Darren Byfield in 2008 and had another daughter, Tiani, but the couple filed for divorce a year later.
The mum-of-two is currently single and focusing on her career, which now includes a seat on the Loose Women panel.
