Miley Cyrus appears to have responded to X Factor viewers disappointed that her performance last night was toned down and lacking controversy.

After weeks of shock antics including twerking, barely-there costumes and even lighting a cigarette on stage, she surprised some by opting for a demure and understated performance on the X Factor results show on Sunday (17 November).

Miley wore a floor-length gold dress for an emotional rendition of single 'Wrecking Ball'. There was no OTT dance moves, no stripping, no tongue action… just a raw performance.

Of course, some viewers who tuned in expecting to see another headline-grabbing turn by Miley were quick to voice their disappointment on Twitter.

Miley's reaction? "Damned if you do, damned if you don't," she tweeted afterwards.

She later responded to herself, writing: " SO DO WHAT THE F**K YOU WANT. love always, me."

The former Hannah Montana star also admitted that she'd been ill during her performance, telling fans later that night: "Happy to get some rest. Time to go be sicky."

She then added that she'd been put on vocal rest.

Miley's X Factor performance was certainly less controversial than her slot with Robin Thicke at the MTV VMAs!

Last night's X Factor saw judge Louis Walsh lose his first act of the series, Sam Callahan. Sam fell into the bottom two alongside Luke Friend after they received the fewest public votes on Great British Songbook night.

Louis refused to vote as Luke is also a member of his team, meaning it was the majority votes of Sharon Osbourne and Gary Barlow that sent Sam home.

Gary also performed on the results show, treating viewers to a rendition of his new single 'Let Me Go'.

X Factor continues Saturday night on ITV.
