James Arthur has quit Twitter for good after a difficult week in the spotlight.

The X Factor winner, 25, announced his decision last night (November 16) after a troubled few days - which included a public row with comedian Frankie Boyle on the social networking site.

James wrote the message: "#LOVE to my fans but I'm coming off twitter for good. HQ will be doing all my tweets from now on. PEACE!"

Just hours before the announcement, James wrote another revealing message, saying: "Learnt a lot this year. Hurt a lot this year. F*cked up a lot this year. Loved a lot this year. Lost a lot this year. Roll on 2014. #LOVE."

James' troubles began this week when he came under attack for perceived offensive lyrics on a "diss" track he released online.

The lyrics were about unsigned rapper Mickey Worthless, who James called "queer".

James later took the track down and publicly apologised, saying on Twitter: "I just have to say I'm extremely disappointed in myself for being so naive with the diss track I made for an unknown rapper recently.

"Some of the things said in this rap can be mistaken for homophobic slurs and I assure you homophobia is something I do not believe in.

"Deeply deeply sorry to any gay or lesbian people out there.

"Plus Rylan is one of my best mates and he is as gay as they come! #LOVE."

While James was able to use Twitter to apologise for his controversial lyrics, he later came unstuck when he engaged in a public row with comedian Frankie Boyle on the site.

When Frankie insulted James' education and appearance and called him homophobic, James fought back - but then decided to bow out.

It's not the first time James has been involved in a public spat on Twitter. Previous sparring partners have included fellow X Factor winner Matt Cardle and boyband One Direction.

James' self-titled debut album reached No.2 on last week's Official UK Chart.

He will release his new single 'Recovery' on 15 December.
