Marvin Humes, JB Gill, Oritse Williams and Aston Merrygold told The Sun it took them months to come to the decision, but they feel it is the "right time" for the them to call it quits.
Marvin explained the band had now come to the end of a five-year contract so if they wanted to continue together they'd have to sign another lengthy contract requiring three or four albums, which they decided just wasn't the best option.
He said: "We never wanted to overstay our welcome. We never wanted to be that band where people said, 'Oh, bloody hell. It's JLS again.' We wanted to finish on a high. We're finishing with an arena tour - our third arena tour - and that is a massive achievement."
JLS shot to fame on The X Factor back in 2008 and even though they lost out to Alexandra Burke during the final, they have been one of the show's most successful acts.
Their discography includes hits like 'Beat Again', 'She Makes Me Wanna' and 'Everybody In Love'.
Aston wanted fans to know the band are still the best of friends and there has been no falling out - this is just a natural progression to the next stage in their lives.
JLS later updated their official website with a message confirming the split and telling fans how important they had been to the band over the years.
"It has been the most incredible journey over the last 6 years and we have achieved more things than we could have ever dreamed possible," they said. "Thanks to all of you guys, your support, your dedication and your love, you have changed our lives forever and we wouldn't be where we are today without you."
The group are currently working on their final album, appropriately called Goodbye: The Greatest Hits, which will include a new single later this year. There will also be a tour.
"Goodbye; The Greatest Hits Tour will be the last time that we will perform together as a 4 and we want to make sure that this tour is the best ever and that we end on a high! We will always remain brothers and friends and we will always be your boys," they said.
While it's the end for the group music-wise, they will still be working together on their JLS Foundation to raise money for charity.
"As always we will continue to support each other and we hope you will enjoy watching us grow individually in our new chapters going forward. We want to look at this final year as a celebration of all that we have achieved together. We hope you can look back and remember all the great moments that you have been responsible for," they concluded.
While we're sad to see the band break up, we're sure this won't be the last we see of any of the boys.
Marvin, of course, is married to The Saturdays singer Rochelle Humes and they're expecting their first child together very soon. He's also been acting as a roving entertainment reporter for Daybreak and working as a DJ on Capital FM.
Aston, meanwhile, has been filming his role on Got To Dance, while Oritse and JB also have new ventures lined up.
