The MTV Europe Music Awards don't do things by halves and this year was no different with acrobats suspended from the ceiling, fireworks surrounding the three stages and an A-list crowd of celebs.

The circus-themed awards show, held at Frankfurt's stunning Festhalle dished out awards to Carly Rae Jepsen, Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey and saw performances from the likes of No Doubt, Rita Ora, Pitbull and The Killers.

Reveal was there to see all the action and here are our pick of the highlights of the night.

Best show-stopping outfit: Kim Kardashian

Sashaying down the red carpet with a four-foot black shimmering train, Kim Kardashian was certainly no shrinking violet. In fact her gorgeous fishtale gown was so long that it required a minder on the red carpet especially to check no one accidentally trod on it! Kim was joined by boyfriend Kanye West, who was staying firmly in the shadows and letting his reality queen girlfriend shine.

Best live performance: Taylor Swift

Having picked up three awards, it was Taylor's night and with the hefty responsibility of the final performance, it was always going to be big. Embracing the circus theme with gusto Taylor's performance of 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' saw her take on the role of ringmaster as she shimmied across two stages with a motley crew of weird and wonderful circus acts in tow.

Best get up and dance moment: Psy

Host Heidi Klum did her rendition, German favourite David Hasselhoff even got in on the action, but no one does Gangnam Style quite like Psy. The South Korean rapper not only performed his trademark dance routine with a bumper crew of backing dancers, but he also picked up the award for 'Best Video'.

Biggest upset of the night: Rihanna

Despite being nominated for six awards and receiving huge cheers from the Frankfurt fans whenever her name was mentioned, Rihanna (seen below performing at the Victoria's Secret Runway Show last week) left empty handed. No wonder she decided against making the journey to Germany in person – much to our disappointment. Better luck next time RiRi.

Most down-to-earth celeb: Lana Del Rey

She may not have performed on the night, but Lana Del Rey was there to pick up her award for 'Best Alternative Act'. We spotted the gorgeous singer dressed down in jeans and pumps in Starbucks at the airport the following morning and even queuing with the economy class passengers to board her flight. We like your style Lana!
