Wheelchair-bound pensioner Betty Jeffery might have appeared to be an easy target but the 76-year-old is in fact a national arm-wrestling champion.
Badass Betty was on her way to a funeral in Pitsea, Essex, when she was set upon on her mobility scooter.
The thief grabbed Betty's bag, which contained £60, but if she was expecting an easy getaway, she must have got quite a shock.
The grandmother-of-three told the Daily Mail: "I didn't have time to think about what I was doing but when I saw her face next to mine I just punched her.
"I could see the shock on her face the moment I hit her."
As the commotion caught the attention of two men who came running over, the mugger dropped the bag and fled.
Betty, who lives with her husband Colin, 76, in Basildon, uses a wheelchair after contracting polio as a child.
She won the ladies arm-wrestling event at the British Wheelchair Disabled Championship in 1997 and also enjoys rifle shooting.
"I am not a weakling," she told metro.co.uk. "She picked on the wrong person."
