This happened to Norfolk police force and resulted in a thrilling 10mph chase.
When Nathan Lovell, 25, pinched the vehicle from Tilney St Lawrence in Norfolk, the police embarked in six cars to catch the thief.
They even had a helicopter on the case – but the fleet was unable to catch up with the tractor-jacker for an hour.
Driving through a field and a set of farm gates, the chase left £500 worth of damage in its wake.
It finally ended when Lovell reached a dead end and fled from the still moving vehicle.
Norwich crown court heard he deliberately stole the tractor in order to get caught and go to prison.
The Daily Mirror reported he had a history of depression and as he was on licence for another crime, couldn't cope and wanted to be jailed.
In court he pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle-taking, dangerous driving, failure to stop and driving without insurance.
He was sentenced to eight months in prison and received a 28-month driving ban. He was also ordered to take a new driving test.
