What's more embarrassing than going to all the effort of nicking an empty cash machine?

Probably realising it's fallen out the back of your getaway van in front of a police car.

It may sound unbelievable, but yes, people really can be that stupid.

Jamie Keegan and Marc Shelton, both 33, dragged an ATM out of a Halifax branch in Manchester.

Even though the machine had been plastered with an 'out of order' sign, they decided it was worth lugging the ridiculously heavy contraption to their van.

Obviously, it was empty. But that didn't deter the raiders who proceeded to drive off with it.

Police caught up with them and saw it fall out of the open back door of their vehicle.

They also managed to catch up with the bungling criminals – one of whom was found hiding in a wheelie bin and another was crouched behind a fence.

Both admitted burgling the bank and also to another break in in North Wales. A Manchester Crown Court judge sentenced them to 40 months in prison each for the ATM incident, and six months for the other offence.
