After raiding the house they saw seven-year-old fish Freddie flapping on the floor next to his broken bowl.
Before making off with the McGill family's laptops, camera and cash, they proved they had some sense of moral obligation.
Filling up the kitchen sink with water, they rescued Freddie from the floor and popped him in.
When mum Monica returned to their house in Nottinghamshire, she noticed the smashed goldfish bowl and assumed he had died.
It wasn't until two hours later that she spotted him swimming around in the sink.
The 47-year-old, who is mum to Quinn, 10, West, eight, and Parc, six, told The Daily Mail: "It sounds strange but our fish has been known to jump out of his bowl so I thought he might have knocked it off."
She added her and the children are "really grateful" that the burglars "took the time to save Freddie."
