A distraught pet owner had to call 999 when she realised she'd accidentally put her kitten in the wash.

Linda Dorland, from Surrey, unknowingly scooped up adorable kitten Poppet with a pile of her daughter's clothes and popped her on a 30C cycle.

It wasn't until five minutes later that she heard an unusual noise coming from her washing machine.

She was horrified to see Poppet's little head going around and around in the wash.

Stopping it immediately, she tried to open the door but it was locked.

The 51-year-old had no choice but to call the emergency services, who sent the fire brigade over to rescue Poppet.

Linda told The Daily Express: "I looked in and Poppet was meowing on top of the laundry.

"When I saw her little face going round I had been hysterical. She came out sodden and terrified but fluffier than before, maybe it was the washing powder."

Poor little Poppet!
