On average British wedding guests spends £640 on each special occasion.
That's a third more than last year and it's likely to keep on going up.
But what are we spending it all on?
American Express researchers have suggested lavish hen and stag parties are to blame. Not forgetting to mention the expensive wedding gift.
And our improving economy is allowing guests to travel further afield, spending more on their hotel and travel costs as well as splashing out on an expensive outfit.
The study revealed that guests now spend:
£112 on gifts
£105 on their outfit
£96 on travel
£47 on hair and beauty
£81 on drinks for the day
However the brides and grooms are apparently doing their bit to help with the costs.
A quarter said they purposely planned cheap hen and stag dos with a third choosing a local venue.
Yet only one in 10 couples told their guests not to buy them a wedding gift.
Nicholas Stefanovitz, of American Express, told the Mail Online: "Attending a wedding can be a costly affair and can quickly add up to a large sum of money.
"With the average cost amounting to £640, it's important to plan ahead so that spending for the special day doesn't become a financial headache."
