Marvin Russell had broken into a Dorset town home and taken off with an iPad, laptop and camera.
But when he returned to wipe away his fingerprints, he heard a knock at the door.
While we'd expect most crooks to hide or run away, the brazen 38-year-old actually opened the door to discover officers there.
Neighbours had dialled the police when they saw Russell - who'd only just got out of prison – smashing the front door open!
He was arrested in February and, after Bournemouth Crown Court heard the thief was found with possessions he'd stolen, he was jailed for 18 months for the crime.
In total, the homeless man has 36 convictions for 66 offences.
Recorder Jeremy Wright was quoted in The Sun saying: "It was two burglaries, effectively one but in two parts. You have a very, very bad record."
