John Steel was just ten years old and on holiday with a friend and their family when a thief broke into their caravan and made off with his wallet.
No doubt he thought the item was gone for good but unsuspecting builders found it while working on a house which was once part of a pub near the caravan park in Shaldon, near Teignmouth. It still had a £1 note and an old school photo in it.
The current owner of the house, Shelley Davies, used information written on the back of the picture to post it on Melksham Town Council's Facebook page, where it was instantly recognised by John's friends.
She said that the 45-year-old was "quite amazed" when it was eventually returned to him.
Upon the shock discovery of his wallet, John was quoted in the Daily Mirror, saying: "It's nice to know there are still good people around. I'm not sure what to spend the £1 note on, though."
