Brian Cairns, 55, had spent £20,000 on the 12 tonne box of brass handles that were intended for scrap.
The collection, which also included light switches and letterboxes, were kept in storage for 40 years but they were recently identified as Italian classics by the brand Valli and Combo.
Now, the chap from South Shields, Tyneside, is set to sell the bundle at an auction for a hefty sum.
Speaking about the situation, the dad-of-three was quoted in The Sun saying: "I was just lucky."
Too right! Why does this sort of thing never happen to us?!
