A thief returned to a house he'd burgled a year before to apologise and offer the family £400 but they refused his attempt to make amends and instead called the police.

Criminal Lee Bowen, 27, wanted to turn over a new leaf and decided to go back to the house that he'd raided back in 2013 on New Year's Eve to say sorry and compensate them for what he'd taken.

But homeowner Jason Williams refused to accept the apology and rang the police.

Bowen had nicked a laptop, mobiles, cash and cards from the family home in South Wales.

The crook admitted to burglary at the town's crown court and was given a 12-month community order and told to pay the family £700 compensation.
