Zephany Nurse was just three days old when she was abducted from a hospital in Cape Town in April 1997.
Despite police having no luck in tracing her, her devastated parents, Morne and Celeste Nurse, never gave up hope of seeing their daughter again and celebrated all of her birthdays without her.
However, unbeknown to them, Zephany was living just a couple of miles away under a different name.
But no one had any idea until Zephany's biological sister, Cassidy Nurse, joined her school.
Pupils began to point out how alike they looked and Zephany was invited round to her biological family's home for coffee, where police were called. DNA tests proved that Zephany was indeed their child.
Celeste was quoted on BBC News describing that seeing her daughter again was "like a dream."
She added: "When she [Zephany] met Cassidy, there was just an incredible connection and it started from there.
"Her birthday is on 28 April. This year we can celebrate it with her. It will be her first birthday with us and we have to plan something very big."
Zephany is currently in care. The alleged kidnapper, who is 50 and has no other children, has been charged with kidnapping, fraud and contravening the Children's Act.
