They say honesty is the best policy, and that was certainly the case for one very trustworthy Tesco shopper who discovered £2,198.70 in his grocery bag!

When Kristian Down, 33, forgot his shopping after paying at a self service checkout at Tesco's Littledown Centre in Bournemouth, he quickly ran back to get it – but instead picked up a bag containing over £2k!

Once home, Kristian realised his mistake after uncovering the wad of cash in his bag. The upstanding project manager from Essex returned the money to a duty manager at Tesco the following day.

"I walked in there and said to a security guard 'are you missing some money?' and he looked at me like I was mad," Kristian told The Daily Mirror.

"When I said what had happened they were really shocked."

The money is thought to have been mislaid by a cashier the night before.

Luckily for Kristian, his honesty did not go unnoticed, as Tesco gave him a goodwill gift in the form of a £50 voucher, followed by another £25 voucher in the post to say thank you.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: "Our team have thanked Mr Down and offered him a token of appreciation for returning the money."
