A daredevil pensioner caused chaos on the M1 by driving along the hard shoulder at 12mph on his mobility scooter.

The police received several calls from worried motorists about the unnamed 85-year-old after he joined the busy road at junction 31 near Sheffield.

However, the fearless "driver" seemed totally chilled and completely oblivious to the 40-tonne lorries that were hurtling past him.

Trucker, Steve Saxon said: "I've been driving lorries since 1986 and I don't think I've ever seen anything so bizarre."

Eventually he was escorted safely off the motorway by a police biker and his family were contacted.

Andy Yorkshire, a mobility scooter trainer for South Yorkshire Police, added: "This man should thank his lucky stars he was stopped. He could have been killed."
