From quirky facts to the latest news, most of us rely on Google nowadays but one lady has a lot more to thank it for - after the search engine saved her life.

Caroline Greaves was told by her GP she had an infection but, after scouring the internet, she realised she actually had oral cancer.

The 46-year-old hairdresser was suffering from a pain in her mouth, lumps in her neck and an earache when her doctor prescribed her with six weeks of antibiotics.

But when the pain continued, Caroline, who lives with husband Damian, 44, and son, Ben, eight, typed "oral cancer" into Google and discovered the symptoms matched hers.

Caroline, from Kirby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, demanded a hospital referral and received her official diagnosis for advanced tonsil cancer a week later.

By this point, the disease had spread to her saliva glands and lymph nodes. However after eight weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy she is now in remission.

She told the Daily Star: "If I hadn't Googled it I don't think I would be here today. I knew something wasn't right."
