And it seems we're not the only ones - and that an unused gym membership is just one of the ways we waste money in our half-hearted attempts to get fit.
A new survey of 2,000 adults by British Lion eggs has revealed that us Brits waste an average of £37,529 over our lifetimes on health and fitness fads that we just don't stick to - that's £800 a year!
Out of that, we spend £330 a year on switching to low fat or healthy foods and £123.60 on gym memberships. Exercise classes cost us £146, diet subscriptions or weight-loss groups £78.60 and sport food and drink £64.32.
The rest is made up of equipment (£39.93), slimming supplements (£10.56) and fitness DVDs (£5.43).
However, despite the fact that we're clearly not worried about putting our money where are mouth is when it comes to getting fit, nearly half us sabotage our exercise efforts by tucking into a snack after working out - and it's usually chocolate!
So our new plan is to spend the £800 on a beach holiday - after all, there's no better incentive to trim down and tone up than skimpy swimwear!
