It's not often that a thief apologises for their actions, but one crook has done just that – 22 years on!

Landlady Frances Cunningham was shocked to receive a £100 cheque and handwritten letter from a woman who burgled her pub more than two decades ago.

The apologetic woman, who Frances has not named, wrote: "I'm very, very sorry."

Although she wasn't the main person behind the robbery, the regretful pincher added: "I did not realise the seriousness of my actions at the time.

"I had been through a lot. I am so ashamed and sad because of the fear it may have induced."

The break-in took place at the Sweetenham Arms in Congleton back in 1992 and involved a cigarette machine being smashed up and looted.

Mum-of-three Frances was quoted in the Daily Mirror saying she only "vaguely" recalls the incident and declared that she forgives the lady: "It has obviously been eating away at her – it's sad," she said.

Frances - who is donating the dosh to the church - added: "It warms the heart."
