It sounds like something out of a film - an 83-year-old man is trying to track down an old lover to leave his entire life savings to her.

But this is exactly what Herbert Riley is doing.

The pensioner fell head over heels in love for a girl called Reeni when he was just 24 years old. But sadly, after four years of knowing one another, Reeni suddenly left him and married another man just six weeks later.

Herbert told the Daily Mirror: "One day we had a row and she went to Scotland with a friend where she met someone else and our relationship just came to an end."

Lovesick Herbert went on to marry Margaret in 1959 but she passed away in 1963, after losing a tragic battle with leukaemia and leaving Herbert a widower.

Hebert then saw Reeni was in Manchester in the 1980s but he was unable to muster up the courage to speak to her.

Now, the retired engineer of Stockport is determined to find his first love and has spent £400 on 10,000 leaflets to try and trace her.

Childless Hebert has no family except two brothers, whom he believes "don't need my money", so he is desperate to leave his dosh to his old flame. He admitted: "I think about her all the time."

Apart from a few calls that were not genuine, Herbie, who can't remember Reeni's surname, hasn't had any luck with is quest. He added: "Looking back, I should have taken my chance when I saw her all those years ago but hopefully by doing this I'll get a second chance before I die."

We just hope that Herbert finds his happy ending!
