There's nothing quite like the smell of that fresh sea breeze as you hit the seaside - so it's no surprise that this salty scent has emerged as Britain's favourite smell.

Yummy baking and just-cut grass came close behind as the UK's other most popular scents.

The poll, carried out by AirWick National Parks, spoke to 2,000 adults to discover which aromas we rate the most. And it seems that overall, we're a pretty nostalgic bunch, with scents that evoke fond memories – Sunday roast, barbecues and bonfires - all coming out top.

Some of nature's finest aromas also featured heavily – with the likes of roses, pine trees and freshly cut flowers voted as our most-loved whiffs.

A spokesperson for Air Wick said: "It's not surprising that the smells of nature top our list. Whether it's that longing for fresh air, or a desire to be out in the great outdoors, scents can be highly evocative."

It also seems that we often think of our stomach (who doesn't?!) as food favourites consistently appeared throughout the top 50. Bacon, chocolate, doughnuts and cheese are just a few of the scents that were highly rated – we're peckish just thinking about it!

But with the sea breeze gaining a massive 46 per cent of the vote and baking also bagging a hefty 44 per cent – it's clear that these two scents are firm favourites all over the country.
