They say a dog is man's best friend and for Rachel Hayes and her pet pooch this couldn't be more true.

Springer spaniel Mollypops leapt into action when a sweet became stuck in Rachel's throat.

The heroic pup noticed her owner was in difficulty as she began gasping for breath whilst sat in her kitchen. Luckily for Rachel, closet first aider Mollypops knew exactly what to do.

Unbelievably, the quick-thinking canine attempted the Heimlich manoeuvre, thumping Rachel on the back with her paw and remarkably dislodging the strawberry pastille from her throat.

Rachel, from Carmarthenshire, was quoted in the Daily Mirror saying: "I was having difficulty breathing but Mollypops' sixth sense kicked in and she knew I was in trouble."

"She came up behind me, put her paws on me and bashed on my back with such force the sweet came out.

"I just burst into tears. I was crying and shaking because I thought I was going to die. I gave Mollypops lots of cuddles and said 'I love you'. I told her she was a hero."

Choked up from the episode (quite literally) and thankful for her new lease of life, Rachel spoilt best friend Mollypops with doggy treats.

Laden with sweets and a new toy chicken for her efforts, Mollypops has become a hero, proving just how clever our canine counterparts can be.
