Darcy Gordon, a 23-year-old mum from Lanarks, feared she would fall to her death after a piece of a fairground ride she was sitting in broke off at 200ft off the ground.

The back of a fiberglass seat, which was part of a ride at a fairground in Edinburgh, fell to the ground as supermarket worker Darcy and her friend Chris Cardwell were sitting in it.

Darcy described the incident as "the most horrifying experience of her life."

Thousands of people in St Andrews Square watched as the scene unfolded but luckily no one was injured when the decorative back of the chair plummeted to the ground.

Darcy told The Mirror she was so scared that she clutched the ropes at the side of the seat until the ride ended: "My arms still hurt from gripping so tight!"

She was refunded her £7.50 fare but claimed the staff did nothing further.

A spokesperson for the fairground said: "Detailed safety inspections were carried out following the incident and the ride has been inspected to the satisfaction of an independent safety inspector and expert in amusement rides. The incident is completely unrelated to the maintenance which was carried out on the ride earlier in the day."
