Andrew and Julie Kelham had paid £3,200 for a trip to visit their daughter, Frankie, who has been working abroad in Mexico for eight months.
But after anticipating an emotional reunion, it was only when they attempted to meet Frankie at the airport that they realised they were actually in California.
The couple booked their holiday at a Thomas Cook branch in Harrogate and were correctly registered to stay at the Royal Solaris Hotel in Mexico with flights from Manchester to Chicago, and then on to San Jose.
However, on their connecting flight, they were put on to a plane that took them to the Californian San Jose.
Julie, 51, explained to The Sun how daughter Frankie was extremely disappointed by the mishap: "She was crying her eyes out. We couldn't take it in," she said.
Instead of spending their first night of the trip catching up with their daughter, Julie and Andrew slept on airport chairs before paying £800 to fly to Mexico the next day.
They were initially offered an £800 refund and £100 goodwill voucher from the travel company, but this then increased to £1,400.
