The singer, now 55, reveals that she was raped at knife-point shortly after arriving in New York at the age of 19.
After nearly two decades, the Evita star has chosen to talk about the sexual assault, revealing she was sexually abused by a stranger shortly after arriving in New York City to pursue her dreams of stardom.
In the November issue of Harper's Bazaar magazine, Madonna recalls: "New York wasn't everything I thought it would be. It did not welcome me with open arms. The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building I was dragged up to with a knife in my back."
In the revealing interview, Madonna also talks about her career, her childhood, her rise to fame, finding Kabbalah and being a mother.
She says about those early days in New York: "I was defiant. Hell-bent on surviving. On making it. But it was hard and it was lonely, and I had to dare myself every day to keep going."
