A sweet way to start the day: Toffee Apple Porridge

In this freezing weather, there's nothing quite like a warm bowl of comforting porridge to start off your day.

If you fancy a change from your usual toppings, why not make this gorgeous toffee apple version? Fresh slices of apple are combined with the likes of crunchy pecans and golden syrup for a sweet and satisfying brekkie.

Toffee apple porridge

  • For the topping:
  • 10g (½oz) unsalted butter
  • 1 red or green dessert apple, peeled, quartered, cored & roughly chopped
  • 20g (¾oz) pecan or walnut pieces
  • 1 tablespoon Lyle’s Golden Syrup and extra to serve
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • For the porridge:
  • 40g (1½oz) Mornflake organic oats
  • 275ml (10floz) milk or milk & water


1 Melt the butter in a small non-stick frying pan over a low heat, add the apple and cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring from time to time, until golden and tender.

2 Add the pecans or walnuts, the golden syrup and the lemon juice cook for a further 1-2 minutes until syrupy.

3 Combine the oats, water and milk in a small non-stick pan. Bring to the boil, stirring continuously for 1 minute until smooth. Leave to stand for 1 minute before transferring to a bowl.

4 Top the porridge with the toffee apple mixture and serve with golden syrup.
