With the temperature dropping and Christmas just around the corner, there's nothing more we like than warming up with a tasty mulled wine or hot cider. But we've got a new tipple to try – hot buttered rum!

This recipe is on the Christmas menu at new ultra-chic East London restaurant Bonneville and they've kindly shared it with us.

It uses dark rum, maple syrup and butter, as well as a drop of apple juice. Yum!

Heated up with mulled spices and a cinnamon stick, it's bound to become your go-to drink over the yuletide season.

  • 50ml dark rum (we like to use a Rhum Agricole, such as Saint James from Martinique)
  • 1 teaspoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon mulling spices
  • Warm apple juice
  • Cinnamon stick and grated nutmeg to garnish

1 Place the rum, butter, maple syrup and spices in a heatproof glass. Separately, warm the apple juice.

2 When the apple juice starts to boil, add to the other ingredients and stir until all the ingredients are well mixed.

3 Garnish with a cinnamon stick and some freshly grated nutmeg.
