Each month we give you a lowdown of the top five films we're talking about. From comedy to drama, action and thriller, we'll do our best to bring you a round up of the most popular movies whether it's in cinema, for release on DVD or available on digital download.

August film picks (in no particular order)

Wiener Dog (15)

Starring?

Greta Gerwig is physically incapable of making a bad film, that's a fact. Quirky, lovable and relatable, she has wowed us in every movie she's appeared in from Mistress America to Damsels In Distress. She's joined by Kieran Culkin (Fargo TV series and Igby Goes Down), as well as Danny DeVito who clearly needs no introduction. Plus the adorably weird Zosia Mamet from Girls makes an appearance.

What is it about?

Wiener-Dog tells several stories featuring people who find their life inspired or changed by one particular dachshund, who seems to be spreading a certain kind of comfort and joy. Man's best friend starts out teaching a young boy some contorted life lessons, before being taken in by a compassionate vet tech named Dawn Wiener (Greta Gerwig). Dawn reunites with someone from her past and sets off on a road trip picking up some depressed mariachis along the way. Wiener-Dog then encounters a floundering film professor (Danny DeVito), as well as an embittered elderly woman (Ellen Burstyn) and her needy granddaughter (Zosia Mamet) – all longing for something more.

Why should you watch it?

It did so well at Sundance Film Festival, obvs. It's bound to be cutesy, funny and wacky in equal measure.

Release date?

In cinemas on August 12.

Suicide Sqaud (15)

Starring?

Jared Leto, Jared Leto, Jared Leto - surely that's all you need to know? But seriously, joining the Requiem For A Dream and Dallas Buyer's Club actor are Will Smith, the enviably fabulous Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and even Cara Delevingne. Boom!

What is it about?

You have to either have been without any form of technological communications or living in a cave to avoid hearing about this film. A team of covert supervillains bands together to complete a mission that is likely to kill them all. Imprisoned with this task as the only way out, Deadshot (Will Smith), The Joker (Jared Leto) and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) join forces in this eagerly anticipated comic book adaptation from Fury director David Ayer.

Why should you watch it?

It's been one of the most anticipated films of the year. Jared Leto has spent hours upon hours perfecting his perfect Joker laugh and the movie is set to be the dark and disturbing graphic novel adaption nerds everywhere have been waiting for (including us!).

Release date?

In cinemas on August 5.

Lights Out (TBC)

Starring?

Australian Triple 9 actress Teresa Palmer plays the lead, while Gabriel Bateman has been cast as her little brother. Billy Burke aka Bella's awesome Dad in Twilight also stars alongside Alexander DiPersia (Forever) and Maria Bello - who you might recognise from Coyote Ugly!

What is it about?

When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn't real when the lights went out…and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger... once the lights go out.

Why should you watch it?

It's good for you, isn't it, to be scared half to death? Even the trailer is enough to give us the creeps. Lights Out is from producer James Wan who made The Conjuring. Also the soundtrack is horrifyingly unnerving, in a great way.

Release date?

In cinemas on August 19.

War Dogs (TBC)

Starring?

The Wolf of Wall Street star Jonah Hill acts alongside Miles Teller (Whiplash and the Divergent trilogy) as the films' protagonists. Oh, and then there's Bradley Cooper. Do we even need to explain who he is? He warmed our hearts in Silver Linings Playbook and cracked everyone up in The Hangover. He's also joined by Ana de Armas who starred in Knock Knock last year.

What is it about?

Based on a true story, it follows two friends in their early 20s living in Miami during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a $300 million deal to arm the Afghan Military - a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

Why should you watch it?

Bradley Cooper has co-produced it, so it's got to be good right? His co-producers are Todd Phillips who worked on Borat and Saving Private Ryan producer Mark Gordon. And anyone who's seen the Ryan Gosling cult movie Drive will have no choice but to love War Dogs purely for Cliff Martinez's music.

Release date?

In cinemas on August 26.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (15)

Starring?

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates has some incredibly funny and awesome babes in it. Aubrey Plaza for starters, any fan of Parks and Recreation will know and worship at the feet of Aubrey. She's joined by Pitch Perfect and Twilight dream woman Anna Kendrick. Together they are an unstoppable duo. Mike and Dave are played by Adam Devine and Zac Efron. What a cast!

What is it about?

Hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) place an online ad to find the perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister's Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the uncontrollable duo.

Why should you watch it?

Erm, have you not seen the cast list? I judgmentally used to think Zac Efron was nothing more than a heartthrob for prepubescents. That was until I saw him in Neighbours alongside Seth Rogen and I realised: Zac is a living legend. He's not just incredible to look at, he's also ridiculously funny and doesn't take himself too seriously.

Release date?

In cinemas on August 10.
