Denise, 57, will be playing the mum of transgender character Kyle, who is a member of the ever-growing Slater family - and she can't wait to get started!

Speaking about her new role, Denise said: "I'm thrilled to be part of such an iconic show. I have friends in the cast and can't wait to start.

"It's a short stint but such a powerful role and I'm thrilled to be taking it on."

Denise's character will be called Alison and it is a temporary role. However, insiders at the BBC One soap have hinted that she could be kept on in Albert Square for longer is she impresses.

It is believed the star's storyline will focus on Alison meeting Kyle for the first time since he decided to live his life as a man, and the struggles she faces as she accepts her daughter is now her son.

Denise recently starred in the BBC Two sitcom Boy Meets Girl, which followed the life of a transgender woman.

Speaking about the impact the show had on viewers, she said last year: "We have had so many trans women tell us that it has made them feel more accepted and given them hope of finding love."
