Ted will play the recast version of Mick and Linda Carter's son, taking over from Sam Strike who left the role in 2014.
Ted, whose acting credits include Grantchester, Law & Order: UK and Casualty, said: "I'm delighted to be joining such an iconic show. The Carters are a fantastic family and I can't wait to get started."
Viewers can see his on screen debut as Johnny next month.
Johnny, who came out as gay to his family, was last seen on Albert Square in December 2014 after deciding to go travelling around Europe with his boyfriend Gianluca.
Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins told The Sun: "As the Carters embark on their next big storyline, it felt wrong not to have Johnny back to play a part in that – and learn everything that has happened while he has been away."
Meanwhile, former star of the show Sam - who played Johnny for one year from December 2013 - has since landed a leading film role in Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface, due for release later this year.
Sam spoke about the recast earlier this month, telling our colleagues over at Digital Spy that he wasn't ready to return to soap as he was pursuing new acting projects.
He added: "I think it's a great thing and that the character needs a facelift - and I wish whoever lands it the best of luck."
