The actor, 27, has starred as lovable rogue 'Fatboy' Arthur Chubb since joining the BBC soap in 2010.
In April 2014, Ricky was suspended after being caught on camera allegedly naked and smoking cannabis.
At the time, a BBC spokesperson confirmed he had been suspended for two months with immediate effect and issued a statement saying: "Ricky would like to apologise to EastEnders' viewers for any offence caused and for bringing the show into disrepute."
It was reported that a Skype video clip had emerged allegedly showing the actor performing a sex act while smoking marijuana.
Now, the BBC have confirmed that Ricky will depart the Walford-based soap at the end of his current contract.
It is understood, though, that the decision to write out Fatboy is not linked to his past suspension.
A spokesman for the BBC show said: "We can confirm Ricky is leaving. We wish him all the best."
Ricky will film his final scenes within the next few weeks, and they'll air in the run up to Christmas. But how he leaves Albert Square is being kept top secret.
He first appeared on EastEnders in early 2010, featuring in the main show and its online spinoff E20.
Ricky, who took part in the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special 2013, went on to win the Best Newcomer prizes at the Inside Soap Awards in 2010 and National Television Awards in 2011.
Fatboy has this week become involved in a tentative relationship with market-stall holder Donna Yates (Lisa Hammond), which appeared to then hit the rocks.
