Doctor Foster is a ratings hit, fans call for Suranne Jones to win a BAFTA

The series finale of BBC One drama Doctor Foster was a ratings hit last night.

The gripping drama series starring Suranne Jones saw an average of 7.8 million people tune in to see how Dr Gemma Foster would exact her revenge on cheating husband Simon (Bertie Carvel).

It was nail biting until the very end as Gemma exposed Simon's affair with his young lover Kate Parks (Jodie Comer) in an explosive showdown, which led to new revelations, more deceit and a violent encounter. Throughout it all was edge of your seat, nail-biting, jaw-dropping and compelling viewing.

Suranne, 37, who played Karen McDonald in Coronation Street from 2000 - 2004, was praised throughout the entire series for her portrayal as Gemma.

Written by Mike Bartlett, Doctor Foster told the story of trusted GP Dr Gemma Foster whose charmed life exploded when she suspected her husband of an affair. As she uncovered secrets that shocked her to the core, Gemma was pushed to the brink as she tried to uncover the truth, protect her son and exact her revenge.

The drama has gripped much of the nation over the space of five weeks, and so it comes as no surprise that a huge amount tuned in to find out how the story would end.

Suranne was praised on Twitter for her brilliant acting and many have called for the actress to win a BAFTA. Her former Corrie co-stars have also praised the actress, while others commended Mike and the production team for delivering a gripping storyline.
