Village bad boy Ross was accidentally killed by his brother Pete, played by Anthony Quinlan, after he found out about Ross' affair with his wife Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb).
The fight was in the wake of the helicopter crash that destroyed Pete and Debbie's wedding reception.
It's an understatement to say fans were shocked when they found out Ross would meet a tragic end in the highly-anticipated summer fate storyline.
We totally did not see that coming!
In a video shared via Twitter, Michael said: "I'm sorry that I've had to keep this one a secret from you guys! Thank you so much for all your support over the last couple of years.
"I've had so much fun playing Ross. Thank you, keep watching the show, stay tuned and it's goodbye from me!"
Michael made his first appearance as Ross in Emmerdale in July 2013, and made a permanent return to the show some three months later in October.
This year, Michael was nominated for Best Actor at The British Soap Awards.
Some of Michael's most memorable storylines as Ross includes his romance with Donna Windsor, and following her death, his close bond with her daughter April. More recently, it's been Ross' affair with Debbie.
The second character to die in Emmerdale last night was Val Pollard, played by Charlie Hardwick, who met her fate after becoming trapped following the accident.
Ruby Haswell, played by Alicya Eyo, was the Dales' first helicopter crash victim to be killed off.
