Gogglebox favourite Jay Makin will NOT be returning to the Channel 4 show, it has been confirmed.

Viewers were puzzled when the notoriously quiet TV star did not appear on the popular series on Friday night (10 April).

But despite never saying a word, 'Silent Jay' was sorely missed...

Last month, news broke that Jay had split up from his girlfriend Eve Woerdenweber but fans hoped he would stay on the series... After all, Brighton hairdressers Chris Steed and Stephen Webb remain on screen despite breaking up in 2013.

But, after "Where's Jay?" started trending on Twitter during the last episode, C4 confirmed he had gone for good.

A spokesperson said: "It's with great regret that Silent Jay is no longer in this series of Gogglebox.

"He has been an excellent contributor, and we are very grateful for all he has given to the show."

Fans said they were "gutted" and "heartbroken" about his absence on the sofa, while others demanded he get his own spin-off show...

Jay became a cult hit when he was seen week after week sitting next to Eve on her family's red sofa in Birkenhead with her parents Viv and Ralf.

Despite remaining virtually silent, Jay gained an army of fans who were shocked when Eve, 20, and Jay, 22, split last month leaving Jay "gutted".

Meanwhile, in other Gogglebox news, it recently emerged that the programme has one very big fan: Hollywood heavyweight Russell Crowe.

The Gladiator star tweeted on 4 March: "The joys of Gogglebox. My first time. What a hoot."

Gogglebox airs every Friday on Channel 4 at 9pm.
