Golden Globe winning actor Idris Elba reprises his iconic role as DCI John Luther for the two-part special, which he begun filming in London earlier this week.
It looks like fans will be kept on the edge of their seats once more, as Idris revealed: "It's great we've been able to do this Luther special. John is so close to my heart, he's part of me.
"The fans won't be disappointed with his return – it's explosive and definitely goes up a gear!"
Idris was busy filming scenes yesterday, and he recorded a short video message, simply telling fans that "it's back".
A synopsis for the special reads: "Luther's back. Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he's drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he's ever been."
Elizabeth Kilgarriff, executive producer of BBC drama production, added: "It's very exciting to have Idris Elba back as DCI John Luther and to be in east London shooting the show's fourth instalment.
"[Writer and creator] Neil Cross has pulled out all the stops to make this the biggest, scariest story yet and it's a privilege to welcome such a glittering array of acting talent to our already stellar cast."
It was announced in November last year that Idris would reprise his role for the BBC crime drama.
It was a welcome surprise for fans, as it was believed the third series - which wrapped up in July - would be the very last. The gripping series three finale saw the shock death of Luther's sidekick Justin Ripley.
The Luther special is due to air on BBC One this autumn.
