Writer and creator Neil Cross, says: "Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there's hardly been a minute when I didn't wonder what happened next. So I decided to find out.

"We're putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work."

This is welcome news for fans who thought the third series, which wrapped up in July this year, would be the very last.

Following the end of series three, there was mounting speculation that the successful TV format could potentially be developed into a film.

The last series of Luther - which was voted in the top five of Reveal's Best British TV shows of 2013 - was a nail-biting episode, as viewers watched the shock death of Luther's sidekick Justin Ripley.

The new special episodes of Luther are expected to air in March.
