Twitter went into meltdown last night after ITV revealed the second series of Broadchurch will return in January 2015.

The popular crime drama returns with David Tennant as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy and Olivia Colman as Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller.

Broadchurch attracted large audiences last spring with it's gripping storyline based around the mysterious murder of 11-year-old Danny Latimer in a small coastal town in Dorset.

After the first series wrapped up in April, producers assured fans that it would be back, saying they were "thrilled by the audience response."

News of Broadchurch's January broadcast date was revealed through a two-part teaser last night (16 November).

In the first video, Alec asks: "There was a boy, and he was killed. I caught the killer. So why am I still here?"

In the second video, viewers hear the voice of Ellie, who says: "There was a boy, and he was killed. What happened then destroyed my family, my job and my town. So what do I do now?"

Last year's first series of Broadchurch topped Reveal's poll of the best British TV shows of 2013.
