It turns out that we'd rather watch people bake cakes than play football, as the climax of Great British Bake Off had more viewers than this summer's World Cup final!

Despite being known as a football-loving nation, 12.1 million tuned in to see Germany thrash Argentina in July, but a larger 13.3 million viewed Nancy Birtwhistle win the baking crown on Wednesday (8 October).

The BBC favourite, which sees amateur bakers battle it out in the kitchen, has shot up to the top of popular TV shows. And last year, it even beat Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor in the ratings!

Mary Berry was quoted in The Daily Express discussing the show's success: "The people coming up to me in the street as the series has been going out have all been rather wonderful."

Paul Hollywood added: "The class of 2014 have been exceptional and it has been an amazing reaction from viewers."

Although it always makes us hungry, we reckon fancy cakes make much better viewing than men kicking a ball round!
