Helen, who will be battling it out against the other over 28s for a place in Simon Cowell's final three, explained her other career choice was swayed by the treatment her son received when he fell ill with diabetes.
The mum-of-two explained her son, Joe, fell ill last year and was lucky to pull through thanks to the treatment he received from his doctor and nurses.
She said: "I can't thank the doctors and nurses enough for looking after my son... They've inspired me."
If the competition doesn't work, Helen said she would like to become a paramedic because it would be "rewarding to give something back to the community".
Helen's children, Joe and her daughter Bethan, have had quite the impact on her life and she has admitted they are the reason she wants to do well on the show - to make a better life for them.
Especially seeing as it was Joe that made his mum audition. Sending in his mum's X Factor application for her, Joe secured Helen a first audition.
But why wouldn't she apply herself? "I don't like queuing" said Helen. "That was my excuse!"
During her arena audition, Helen impressed all the judges with her rendition of 'Try A Little Tenderness'. Now through to Simon's Judges' Houses, Helen has said "it's like a dream come true".
She added: "It has only just hit me that I'm in the biggest competition ever and I have got to grab the opportunity with both hands."
Helen will compete against five other hopefuls; Ben Haenow, Fleur East, Jay James, Stevi Ritchie and Lizzy Pattinson.
