The news comes as it's revealed X Factor bosses are introducing a third show each week for the Boot Camp and Judges' Houses stages, meaning it will air on Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September.

This is the first time X Factor will air on a Friday, so it will clash with the return of Strictly's live episode. X Factor will air on Fridays for two weeks.

The two shows already clashed last Sunday with Strictly being triumphant on the night. X Factor boss and head judge Simon Cowell reacted to the news after the ratings figures were released.

He said: "So, the numbers are in. Strictly peak 9.4, X Factor peak 9.2. Round one to them. Such a shame they were both on at the same time!"

Simon had previously expressed disappointment at BBC One's scheduling against his ITV show, but a BBC spokesperson responded, saying they had "very little room to move" due to an extra episode of Coronation Street scheduled at the time.
