For the first time in the show's history, viewers will have the option of voting for free via the programme's official app, available for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.
It will allow fans to cast their votes when the live shows start
"We are constantly looking to innovate around the show," said Mark Brittain from Syco Entertainment. "Giving the viewers the ability to vote free through the app will allow viewers, we believe, an even greater opportunity to interact with their favourite show and, of course, play the hugely important role in deciding the ultimate winner of the series."
As well as allowing free voting, the app also has quizzes, news, photos, games and the 'Fifth Judge' feature allowing viewers to guess which acts should make it through each live show.
Kat Hebden, Head of Digital at FremantleMedia UK Interactive, said: "We have millions of fans across multiple platforms and every year the digital elements of the show get bigger and better. The introduction of free in app voting on The X Factor will be a real game changer in terms of how people interact with the show and we're looking forward to a fantastic series."
Fans will still be able to vote via the usual methods as well.
X Factor returns to ITV for its 11th series with a launch show on Saturday, 30 August, followed by a second episode the next evening.
This year marks the return of judges Simon Cowell and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. They previously left the series in 2011 to join the US version of X Factor. They'll judge alongside returning Louis Walsh and newcomer, Spice Girl Mel B.
Dermot O'Leary returns as host while BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ Sarah-Jane Crawford takes over from Caroline Flack as presenter of Xtra Factor.
