Here are five facts:
Gary grew up in Oklahoma and went to Kansas State University on a football scholarship. After injuring his knee he stopped pursuing a career in sport and moved to Hollywood to focus on his acting.
He made his film debut in 1971 in Angels Hard As They Come. After this he starred in The Buddy Holly Story, which led to him winning an Academy Award nomination.
Gary then began taking on darker roles in thrillers such as Lethal Weapon, Predator 2 and Point Break - where he starred with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.
In 1989, Gary had a near-fatal motorbike accident after he was riding without a helmet. Gary claims the accident altered his brain and taught him to get his life in order.
Gary has three children by three different women and is a black belt in many martial arts.
