The actress, who first played loudmouth CIlla from 2003 to 2007, will be making a surprise return to the Weatherfield cobbles after seven years.
Cilla, who is the mum of Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) and Chesney Brown (Sam Aston), will be back on screen for six weeks from October.
While exact details of her storyline are being kept under wraps, Wendi's return will help facilitate Jennie's maternity leave in the autumn, as Jennie announced last month that she was expecting her first child with long-time partner Chris.
Wendi said: "I'm really thrilled to have the opportunity to revisit Cilla and the cobbles for a short while and to see what she has been up to for the last 7 years."
Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn said: "We can't wait to see Cilla back on the cobbles, she's a truly unforgettable character who is at the heart of Corrie's rich history."
Cilla's time on Corrie was a memorable one with Fiz, Chesney and Cilla's husband Les Battersby (Bruce Jones) always at the centre of drama.
Known for pulling scams, Cilla made plenty of enemies and left Weatherfield after inheriting a £45k necklace from a pensioner who died while in her care. She was last seen in the DVD spin off Out of Africa in 2008.
Since leaving Corrie, Wendi went on to work in a string of theatre shows, most notably in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Rutherford & Son and White Christmas. Her TV work includes Hacker Time, Sadie J and Crime Stories, including narrating ITV's Britain's Best Bakery and being a finalist on Celebrity MasterChef in 2009.
Following the news, Wendi tweeted: "Thanks for all the lovely messages about @itvcorrie .. Looking forward to catching up with Cilla!"
