The Olympic medallist returns to our screens on 4 January with a second series of ITV's Splash!, the show that challenges stars to learn the intricate skills of diving then perform them in front of millions.
Talking about the skills needed to be a good coach, Tom said: "I'm learning that it needs lots of patience and that you should not use technical terms. You also really need to encourage the celebrities. As soon as they lose confidence, they won't be able to do it. I tell them to blank out the judges and just focus on the process of diving - then it will go well.
"Training the celebrities is actually improving my own diving. It's good to witness the patience it takes and to see things from their point of view."
Tom, 19, said that he "massively admires the courage" shown by the celebrities, describing them as "incredibly brave" for taking on the challenge and not giving up.
"Even if a dive goes wrong they want to do it again. The talent in this series has been incredible," he said.
"Some of the celebrities are progressing so much more quickly than they did last year. After just two days of training all of them (were) further ahead than the guys were last year after three weeks."
Splash!, hosted by Vernon Kay and Gabby Logan, returns Saturday, 4 January at 7.20pm on ITV.
Contestants taking part in the first heat are Michael Strachan, Diversity's Perri Kiely, TOWIE's Gemma Collins, Hollyoaks' Gemma Merna and ex-EastEnders star Ricky Groves.
