Viewers saw TV presenter and journalist Matthew become teary-eyed when he arrived in the Australian jungle on Sunday night (17 November) and was faced with the reality of creepy crawlies and other jungle delights.
Appearing on ITV's Daybreak today, his wife Amelia said: "He is a very emotional person. You don't get to see that every day because you see the professional man on TV but he is incredibly emotional and you're seeing the softer side of him. That's real… At home he's very sensitive, he still cries at Marley and Me when we watch it and that's the real person you're seeing."
Matthew was chosen by the public to face last night's Bush Tucker Trial alongside TOWIE star - and it wasn't a pleasant one.
The eating challenge saw Matthew and Joey having to chow down on such delicacies as ostrich penis, camel toe and pig's brain. Unfortunately for Matthew, he was just pipped to the post by Joey and had to return to his camp with no meals.
"It was absolutely horrendous, I was home alone and I just wanted to reach into the TV and give him a big hug and tell him that everything was going to be OK," said Amelia.
Although Matthew and Joey were up against each other in the trial - and will face another Bush Tucker Trial tomorrow - Amelia thinks they have a fantastic relationship.
"It's the Joey and Matthew show!" she said. "You see I think people are voting for them [to do the trials] because they're popular and they want to see more of them! … He is adorable Joey Essex, I must say, he's like a puppy and I can see that Matthew's treating him like a kid brother so I love the relationship between the two of them."
