It's a cake of two halves - The Great British Bake Off V Football

It seems a new phenomenon is sweeping the nation. Men everywhere are all in flumox, torn between their TV screens and their... baking tins.

Not quite what you expect this early on in footie season, but the new series of The Great British Bake Off has left men struggling to choose between the glorious game and a Vicky sponge.

Tuesday night saw scores of fellas take to Twitter to air their dilemma - watch England versus Ukraine or the next episode of the hugely popular BBC2 cooking contest, hosted by Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins, Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.

Matthew Angell tweeted: "Hmm. England football or The Great British Bake Off? Only one winner there: 'good bake', 'soggy botton.'"

While Chris Pickup laid down the ultimatum: "England have 20 minutes to impress me or I shall watch British Bake Off instead."

In the ratings war, the football just pipped TGBBO, with 5.4million to their 4.6million viewers.

A report by The Grocer magazine last month revealed that home baking is on the rise among British men, with the show making it a more 'macho' pastime than before.

A man with a penchant for puddings and a flare for fondant fancies? Sounds like a delicious combo to us.
