Week old elephant plays in mud for the first time in cute clip
The new arrival to Chester Zoo lived out all our childhood dreams and spent around half an hour slipping and sliding in the mud, before mum called time on the antics and wiped her newborn's eyes and ears with her trunk.
Check out the clip, and prepare to 'aww' when Nandita strides into shot with her teeny trunk and tail!
Andy Mckenzie, Chester Zoo's team manager of elephants, (what a great job!) said:
"The herd often like to play in mud and, on warmer days, it's a great way for them to cool off. Wallowing in mud also helps to keep the elephants' skin healthy and they can usually be seen dust bathing in sand and scratching on branches and rocks afterwards." Maybe that's how the mud mask craze first kicked off...
Andy revealed that the calf fearlessly joined in with the mud antics, whilst mum Thi hovered nearby trying to keep the youngster safe. Not really that different from us, are they?
"Our new calf Nandita Hi Way is only a few days old but she's wasted no time in diving in to enjoy a splash with the others. All of the family really look out for her, and mum Thi in particular is never far away - always there to lend a helping trunk should Nandita need a bit of mud wiping away from her eyes and ears."
If that's put you in the mood to feast your eyes on other cute animals, here's a sloth drinking milk out a bottle.
