The six-month-old, known as Tatu, showed his new independent side recently at Paignton Zoo in Devon, as he happily played in the trees on his own.
However, making sure not to wander off too far, the little one stayed within arm's reach of his protective mum Mali and was soon back by her side for some cuddles.
Despite the cold weather, Mali then appeared to celebrate her son's milestone by enjoying a frozen fruit ice lolly. Yum!
Tatu was the first orangutan to be born at Paignton Zoo in 16 years.
